Diamond-structured nanonetwork gold as mechanical metamaterials from bottom-up approach

Abstract Herein, this work aims to develop a facile method for the fabrication of metallic mechanical metamaterial with well-ordered diamond structure from bottom-up approach using self-assembled block copolymer templated electrochemical deposition. By controlling effective volume fraction PDMS in PS- b -PDMS via solvent annealing followed by HF etching PDMS, it is feasible obtain nanoporous PS diamond-structured nanochannels and used as template Subsequently, nanonetwork gold (Au) can be fabricated. As evidenced nanoindentation micro-compression tests, properties Au after removal give combination lightweight mechanically robust characteristics an exceptionally high reduced elastic modulus 11.9 ± 0.6 GPa yield strength 193 11 MPa above Hashin-Shtrikman upper bound 72 bending-dominated at equivalent density. The corresponding deformation mechanism elucidated morphological observations experimentally finite element analysis (FEA) numerically. This demonstrates fabricating monolith nanoscale, giving superior performance metamaterials.
